Fewer Quick Fixes Forcing More Creative Decarbonization Efforts for E&Ps:
Many US E&P companies have already picked the low-hanging fruit in decarbonization—reducing or eliminating routine flaring, replacing high-bleed pneumatic gas equipment, eliminating larger methane leaks, and purchasing quality voluntary carbon offsets. E&Ps must broaden their low-carbon strategies to fully achieve emissions targets. Maral Ryzakuliyeva, principal research analyst on the Companies and Transactions team says “E&Ps are trending toward making bigger investments in large-scale solutions, such as CCUS or clean energy, as the majors have done.”
Upstream Solutions North Sea Upstream Oil and Gas Emissions Study:
The North Sea is one of the world’s most significant oil and gas producing regions. With an estimated 21 billion barrels of oil equivalent reserves the basin after almost 50 years of development continues to be an important supplier of crude for European refiners and the continent's most reliable source of natural gas to guarantee energy security. As the world accelerates its ambition to achieve net zero, there is growing interest in understanding the relative greenhouse gas (GHG) competitiveness of upstream oil and gas. This insight explores the range and character of the GHG intensity of North Sea production. It is the first in a series of analyses of new emission datasets from S&P Global Commodity Insights.
CCUS is a key weapon in combating climate change to achieve Net Zero targets, and its technology is ever evolving. The industry is rapidly growing and under increasing pressure to raise its performance. Project failure is costly, and operators need to identify risk throughout the chain, quickly and accurately.
