COP28 in context: How global energy and emission trends will frame the negotiations

The early 2020s have seen fundamental changes in geopolitics, economics and energy market dynamics, all of which will have a long-lasting impact on demand for oil, gas, coal and renewables, as well as global GHG emission trends. This short presentation outlines S&P Global Commodity Insights’ long-term energy & climate scenarios, highlighting key trends that will define the global energy transition.

  • Revisions to our base case outlook since 2021
  • Scenarios and net-zero cases: key metrics
  • Common themes across all outlooks
  • The roles of hydrogen and CCS
  • Prospects for peak fossil fuel demand
  • Global net-zero commitments
  • Implications of emissions pledges made under the Paris Agreement

Panel 1: What are the key metrics and benchmarks for the future?

  • There continues to be inconsistencies and differences of opinion on how we should account for which emissions, and how they should be reported. Companies, civic society and states are all looking to boost action, but how should we balance reductions, offsets and claims? What constitutes a sufficient definition of ‘net’ in a future plan?
  • There is a growing divergence between measurements of emissions, on both sides of the accounting ledger. Can the world achieve universal methodologies and metrics? Can all the different actors act to coordinate, collaborate and bring transparency?
  • Should metrics drive markets or should markets drive metrics?

Hannah Hauman, Global Head of Carbon Trading, Trafigura Group Pte Ltd
Fred Krupp, President, Environmental Defense Fund
Brad Crabtree, Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
Moderator: Marie-Louise Du Bois, Global Head of Carbon Pricing, Energy Transition, S&P Global Commodity Insights

Panel 2: What does “big acceleration” in the energy sector look like?

  • What is the future role for oil and gas companies?
  • Can companies meet investor and shareholder expectations simultaneously?
