Fuel oil markets globally have had a turbulent year so far, brought by an unexpected turn of events amid the coronavirus outbreak. Last year, the shipping industry switched their gears to prepare for the International Maritime Organization’s lower sulfur cap regulation on marine fuels, with the expectation of a collapse in high sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) prices, and a wide spread between HSFO and 0.5%S marine fuel, as demand for the latter, the now compliant fuel, would soar. However, COVID-19 curbed market expectations as global oil demand came under pressure, with most regions struggling with an oversupply of product.
