Lead instructor: Guillermo Chavez, Director, CI Consulting Latin America/Caribbean,
    S&P Global Commodity Insights
  • 9:15 am  CASE STUDY  Modeling Decarbonization in the Dominican Republic through Coal Retirement Alternatives
This session will focus on explaining the main components going into a power market model that allows the Dominican Republic to analyze various alternatives to coal-fired power plants, while keeping a balance between energy security, sustainability and affordability. Several pathways for reducing the utilization of up to two of the country's three coal power plants will be reviewed. Methodological frameworks to compare scenarios and their impacts with data-based analysis will be presented.
  • 10:15 am Power Market Fundamentals (Part 1): Drivers of Electricity Demand
The pace of electricity demand growth in the Caribbean has evolved significantly over the last 70 years. In this session, we will examine the drivers of electricity demand and review how these have changed through time.
  • 11:00 am Refreshment Break
  • 11:15 am Power Market Fundamentals (Part 2): Electricity Supply Trends
The Caribbean power supply mix is undergoing a massive transformation. Natural gas generation reached record highs in 2023 and is growing again in 2024. Yet with wind and solar experiencing rapid growth, the future role for natural gas in the power sector remains uncertain. In this session, we will examine the historical trends and drivers shaping the Caribbean supply portfolio and discuss the current state of the market.
  • 12:00 pm Luncheon for Training Attendees
  • 1:00 pm  BREAKOUT SESSION  Navigating the Energy Trilemma in the Caribbean
In this breakout session, participants will engage in a collaborative workshop focused on assessing and addressing the energy trilemma—balancing energy reliability, affordability, and sustainability—in the Caribbean context. Attendees will work in small groups and present their findings and strategies to the larger group, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and collaborative problem-solving. This session aims to equip participants with practical insights and actionable plans to advance energy solutions applicable in different countries across the Caribbean

    — Current State Analysis: Identify and discuss the current status of energy systems in various Caribbean communities, focusing on reliability, affordability, and sustainability.
    — Vision for the Future: Define where these communities should ideally be in terms of the energy trilemma, setting clear and achievable goals.
    — Pathways to Progress: Develop strategic plans to bridge the gap between the current state and the desired future state. This includes identifying key actions, technologies (such as BESS), policies, and partnerships needed to achieve these goals.
  • 1:45 pm Refreshment Break
  • 2:00 pm  CASE STUDY  Empowering the Caribbean: The Role of Battery Energy Storage Systems
In this training session, participants will explore the transformative impact of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in the Caribbean. Through an in-depth case study, we will examine how BESS technology is being leveraged to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions across the region. Key topics include:

    — Introduction to BESS: Understanding the basics of battery energy storage systems and their components.
    — Analysis: A detailed examination of real-world applications of BESS in the Caribbean, highlighting successful projects and their outcomes.
    — Economic and Environmental Benefits: Discussing how BESS can reduce energy costs, enhance grid stability, and support renewable energy integration.
    — Future Prospects: Exploring the potential for further adoption of BESS technology and its role in achieving energy sustainability in the Caribbean
