The dual challenge: Maintaining supply security and accelerating energy transition

Global commodity prices have been on a roller coaster ride in the last year and a half, bringing energy supply security back to the top of the priority list for governments and companies. Yet, the global consensus on the need for an emissions-focused energy transition has become consistently stronger, even when challenges to achieving it have also become more evident.

  • Is the current energy crisis over? How should future shocks be avoided?
  • What would a balanced and orderly transition look like?
  • Will the focus on energy security speed up or slow down energy transition?
  • What are opportunities for China to play a larger role in a low-carbon future?

Scenarios (future energy system mix)

The recent market volatility implies significant uncertainties about the path ahead. The world must change its primary energy consumption drastically in order to hit emissions targets, but there are several ways these changes may come to fruition. S&P Global outlines several scenarios including our most likely case, called Inflections and our aggressive emissions cut case called Green Rules. We also imagine a world where very little is done to reduce emissions, called Discord, along with two paths to a net-zero emissions future. These scenarios have important assumptions and implications on how the world's energy landscape might change. How will Asia’s role in reducing emissions change and what will be the impact on oil, natural gas and coal?

Jeffrey Moore,
Manager, Long Term Natural Gas

11:30am

Can a balance be achieved between E&P and Low-Carbon?

As companies seek to balance continuing investments in core oil and gas versus pivoting into new low-carbon business areas, S&P Global Commodity Insights is able to offer insights into the pace and character of how this transition is unfolding, and what to expect in the near future. This presentation will aim to answer some key questions facing the upstream business:

  • What are the key trends shaping global oil and gas exploration and development?
  • How are companies adapting their investment strategies?
  • What is the approach and progress of decarbonization efforts?
  • Is the industry making key strides towards CCUS initiatives?

China's Aging Demographics: What does it mean for food and ag commodities?

According to China's National Bureau of Statistics, China's population dropped in 2022 for the first time in 60 years. Additionally, China's birth rate fell to its lowest level recorded despite the one-child policy being lifted in 2016. A demographic shift is taking place in the country that has been a driving force in agricultural demand and trade over the past 30 years. This shift could potentially slow China's growth dramatically from what food and agricultural markets have become accustomed to. Will similar food and agricultural commodity consumption languishing happened in Japan in early 1990s happen in China? In this session, we try to encourage audience to build their reflections on this issue by looking the changes in China demographics and economy, China’s food & agricultural demand, and discuss what does China’s consumption could look like going forward.
