Webinar: Clean energy development in the “Global South” — challenges and opportunities in the electric power sector
The “Global South” grouping of countries – in Africa, Latin America, and South / Southeast Asia – accounts for 58% of the global population today, but only consumes 26% of total final energy and 20% of electricity (see infographic below). Per capita electricity consumption remains very low in the Global South, with many coping with only basic energy access or chronic shortages. With global climate actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, many markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are having to decarbonize while demand is still growing at a fast pace.
Ahead of COP28, experts from S&P Global Commodity Insights surveyed the current power sector landscape in key markets of the Global South, shared our outlooks for conventional and renewable power development, and discussed what companies and investors may need to consider when looking at Global South opportunities. Key questions covered included:
- How fast is power demand growing in Global South markets and what power generation resources are meeting this demand today?
- What are the key issues shaping power markets and energy policies?
- How many power generation projects – conventional and renewables – are being proposed or built today? Who are the key players?
- What are S&P Global Commodity Insights’ outlooks for power demand, supply, and costs and what are some of the risks and uncertainties associated with the outlooks?
- Given the above, what opportunities may arise for investment in the current or future power market environment?
