Asia’s demand for electricity is projected to continue to grow in the coming decades. How will it be satisfied?
With environmental, cost and safety concerns forcing governments to legislate away from coal, oil and nuclear energy, LNG is set to become one of Asia’s biggest beneficiaries, with new regasification capacity under construction from Pakistan to the Philippines.
This energy transition is also opening opportunities for renewables—an area where China, in particular, has been making heavy investments. Meanwhile, Southeast Asian countries have committed to produce 23% of their energy from renewable sources by 2025.
But despite tighter regulations, coal is expected to retain its dominance in Asia’s electricity mix in the years to come. Moreover, weakening fuel oil prices as a result of IMO 2020 could see oil competing again in power generation, affecting the rate of oil-to-gas switching in price-sensitive emerging markets.
What will these shifts mean for future energy demand in the region? How could this affect markets for oil, coal, gas and power?
